Doesn't add anything of note to the first film and seems unnecessary
The Phelps family seem similar the perfect subject field for Louis Theroux since his mode of performance generally is to go into odd or extreme groups (families, hobbies, jobs etc) and chat with the people in an innocent-abroad type way. With the first moving-picture show he did on them information technology did really piece of work and information technology made for a good film where he was able to explore their believes and question them pretty well; it as well helped that Keith Allen did a like film that was so awful that it made Theroux's look even better by comparing. Suffice to say I didn't think the first picture show had left the task half-done or that there was a huge expanse of complexity within the very simple Phelps' family that was untapped, so I wasn't certain what the point of a second movie was.
After it screened for the first time I read the title and the content and saw that information technology involved people leaving the group and besides a civil law-suit beingness taken out and so maybe this was going to open the bailiwick out a lot more and give Theroux more cracks to politely ease himself into. Having at present seen the film for myself information technology seemed that, if this was the known aim of the producers so if nothing else information technology was certainly known to the church building members besides because Theroux pretty much gets zilch other than a replay of the things he already got in the commencement motion-picture show. What he covers is the same protests, the same unquestioning bigotry of the members and the same presentation of people being knowingly atrocious merely justifying it past convincing themselves that they have a correct to be this way – basically the same textile of the first film but played over again. The law-suit gets a mention and a few one-time members become a few minutes to talk then we know they are rejected but otherwise it is all the same as the starting time film.
The trouble with this is not just that it seems unnecessary but also that, without the "introductory" feel of the first moving picture, at that place is non exploration to be had and with nothing new to offer it merely feels similar Theroux was trying to get ratings off the back of the previous film – considering the Phelps seem no different hither than teenage boys trolling on the net, happy to stupor, happy to upset and convincing themselves that they take a right to do information technology. Information technology doesn't help that everyone is wise to Theroux this time; "the thing that confuses me..." starts Louis at one bespeak, only to exist told "you're not dislocated", which is totally truthful, he isn't and it is also evident from other comments that Theroux is seen equally a weasel and they are keen to make certain and give him only the party-line without any cracks. Access is noticeably less than in the first moving-picture show and discussions are non every bit good. The only expert bit is also a echo of last fourth dimension, where Louis chats with the 18-yr old Grace, which is a repeat of when he did get good material from a couple of the teenage girls. This time though, Grace is surrounded by iii other members of the family to make sure Louis tin't break her downward – information technology is even so good though because Grace is not just quite sweet in her manner but too seems to exist a creative lensman and it is sad to see her living how she is.
Generally though, at that place is nothing here and if you've seen the first picture on this subject there really isn't a reason to lookout this one; and if yous haven't seen the first one and so why lookout man this follow-upwardly when the first is much better? I've watched some great Louis Theroux films in the last month (Miami Megajail for example) and have some promising ones coming upwardly (the Extreme Beloved pairing) just this was a unnecessary motion-picture show that offers nothing and ane of his weaker films as a result.
