Bugatti and Koenigsegg both make ultra-fast, ultra-exclusive hypercars that only the world's wealthiest people can afford to own. They're some of the most exclusive vehicles on the market, and their spec sheets are consistently mind-blowing. The rivalry doesn't stop there: for years, the two brands have competed to make the fastest production car in the world.

It's a record that both Koenigsegg and Bugatti have held twice each, although Koenigsegg holds the most recent record. They're both manufacturers with a reputation for making crazy cars, but which one has the edge? To find out, let's take a look at five of each brand's most insane models, including some of the fastest and most exclusive cars on Earth.

10 Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse Legend Black Bess

The Black Bess special edition Veyron was built as an homage to the Bugatti Type 18, whose nickname was "Black Bess". The Type 18 was one of the fastest road-legal cars of its time, and was owned by the legendary aviator Roland Garros.

Bugatti chose the Veyron as the base for which to commission this special one-off as at the time it was the fastest production car in the world. The car features 24-carat gold accents, and also a painting of the original Black Bess in between the car's two seats.

9 Koenigsegg Agera RS

It was, until recently, the fastest production car in the world, unseated only by the SSC Tuatara. The Agera RS is the pinnacle of Koenigsegg's never-ending quest for speed, reaching an average speed of 277.9 mph on a closed-off stretch of highway in Nevada in 2017.

It's also a stunning-looking car, with the record-breaking example finished in a deep red hue with black and white accents. There's been some questions over the accuracy of the SSC Tuatara's supposedly record-breaking run, so it may be that the car is still in real terms the absolute fastest out there.

8 Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport

Another record breaker, the Super Sport is probably most famous for the moment James May drove it in Top Gear. In 2010 it broke the production speed record, achieving 267.9 mph.

It's also one of the most instantly recognizably Bugatti designs ever, thanks to its bright orange body panels and wheels. Production of the car was limited to just 30 units so it's very unlikely most car fans will ever see one in the flesh.

7 Koenigsegg One:1

The name One:1 refers to the car's power to weight ratio, a figure that many engineers thought would be impossible to achieve in a road car until Koenigsegg did it. The car's 5.0L V8 produces about 1,341hp, thanks in part to an insane 26.1 psi turbo boost.

With a car this light and race-tuned, most enthusiasts would probably assume that it could only run on race fuel and in limited circumstances. In fact, Koenigsegg built the car to be as driver-friendly as possible, so it can run on regular gasoline or E85 and it's surprisingly comfortable inside too.

6 Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport

The Bugatti Chiron was first announced in 2016, but the brand decided that it wasn't quite exclusive enough on its own. They proceeded to build a number of special editions, including this handling-focused Pur Sport edition.

The idea of the Pur Sport is to focus less on the already-insane top speed and try and make the car handle even better round a track. There's a higher redline, new aero, lighter-weight components and a lot of other improvements to really fine tune the Chiron for those who want the best driving experience.

5 Koenigsegg CCR

Koenigsegg started producing the CCR in 2004, with a total of 14 units produced. In 2005, the car set a new world speed record, clocking 241 mph, a full 20 mph faster than the previous record holder, the McLaren F1.

The car is relatively obscure by hypercar standards as the record stood for only a few months until it was eclipsed by the original Veyron later in 2005. Still, the CCR is an absolutely insane car and one that can take credit for starting the Bugatti vs Koenigsegg rivalry.

4 Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Sang Bleu

Mirror finish rarely looks good on cars, with chrome wraps reminding most car fans of cringey YouTubers more than ultra-luxe speed machines. That makes this Sang Bleu edition Veyron all the more impressive, as it looks downright stunning with its reflective bodywork.

It was made to mark the company's 100th Anniversary in 2009, and its name translates as "blue blood". This is a reference to the company's signature color, and as such the car comes with blue-tinted carbon fiber to contrast the glistening aluminium.

3 Koenigsegg Gemera

The Gemera is Koenigsegg's upcoming hypercar and is billed as being the "world's fastest four-seater". It will be a plug-in hybrid, and is expected to have a range of about 30 miles on pure electric power.

It uses three electric motors to produce an unbelievable 1,700hp. Top speed is claimed at 249 mph, which some owner will surely attempt to put to the test as soon as cars are delivered. Production is due to start this year, with around 300 units planned.

2 Bugatti Bolide

Bugatti's latest unveiling is positioned along the lines of the recent Aston Martin Valkyrie and Ferrari FXXK. It's a track-only special, which means the company have made it even more extreme than its road-going predecessors.

Top speed is claimed at 310 mph, and the car produces 1,842 hp when running on 110 octane racing fuel. With cars getting this powerful, someone is going to have to start building longer, faster race tracks just so these owners can actually make use of their cars.

1 Koenigsegg Jesko Absolut

The Jesko Absolut is described by Koenigsegg as the fastest car they'll ever make. While it might seem like an unusual statement, the idea behind stating that is to allow Christian Von Koenigsegg and his crew to concentrate on other engineering developments rather than speed.

That means, at least for the foreseeable future, that this will be Koenigsegg's fastest road-legal vehicle. The car is named after Von Koenigsegg's father, and top speed hasn't been disclosed yet. All the company will say is that "it will be unbelievably fast". Will Koenigsegg do it again and obliterate the current world speed record? It seems they may well do soon.
